Over the week, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has crowdsourced through social media for beneficiaries of their NCCA Cash Assistance Program, in which they are given a total budget of P63.8 million in addition to their initial budget of P4 million.     They have been giving guidelines for application for each artist in every field: theater, visual, architecture, music, literature, language, research, film, dance, and cultural work. This is in line with the simultaneous cancellation of events during the past 2 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it serves as an aid to freelance workers who have no employer to seek help from and/or those who have no employee benefits.   The criteria for beneficiaries are as follows: 1. Not under an employer-employee relationship 2. No regular income 3. Working freelance 4. No source of income due to the ECQ   Further instructions and deadlines are posted on NCCA’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/NCCAOfficial/

In the tough times we are facing with the COVID-19 pandemic, frontliners are often overlooked "silent heroes" who work tirelessly to keep society functioning despite collective struggles.    With this comes "Life In Your Hands," a tribute song featuring Artists for Silent Heroes, that recognize and highlight the important role our 'silent heroes' play in our every day lives.        Coming together to pay tribute are some of the biggest artists in the Universal Records Philippines and PolyEast Records rosters: Martin Nievera, Christian Bautista, Ebe Dancel, Julie Anne San Jose, TJ Monterde, Eunice Jorge of Gracenote, Tutti Caringal of 6cyclemind, Kyle Juliano, Janina Vela, Kiara San Luis of Imago, Daniel Paringit of Better Days, Kurei, Sassa Dagdag, Drei Rana, Selena Marie, and Raffy Calicdan.    The song (written by Chito Ilagan , Therese Marie Villarante, Ito Rapadas, and Njel de Mesa; produced by Ito Rapadas and arranged by Rye Sarmiento) makes use of the classic Auld Lang Syne as its backing track, modernized and given lyrics apt to the world's situation today. With gratitude in their hearts and the song's calming and reassuring lyrics, the song hopes to give further thanks to the silent heroes of our world today.   Life In Your Hands is a project of Universal Records led by its Chairman and President Dr. James G. Dy, Executive Vice President Ramon Chuaying, General Manager Kathleen Dy-Go, and PolyEast Records with its General Manager Jesmond Chua and Finance Director Sharon Dy-Law. The project is made in cooperation with Philippine Chinese Charitable Association, Inc. and Filipino Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Inc., proceeds are for the benefit of Chinese General Hospital and Medical Arts frontliners.   Life In Your Hands is now available for purchase on iTunes and streaming on Spotify and all platforms starting May 6, 2020 under Universal Records.

Following her first solo release, ‘Know What I Want’ last December 2019, August Wahh returns with a triumphant new single that is steeped in sophisticated warmth. ‘Elated’ navigates the nuances of carrying on with life with a recovered sense of identity and purpose. “I wrote Elated as a reminder to myself and to others that no matter what you've been through, the goal is to rise above situations that made you feel small - by accepting where you've been and the journey you’re on, even if you don't know where you’re going,” the neo-soul singer-songwriter shares. “It's a reminder to own yourself and live life to the fullest.” With crwn’s suave beats and jazzy sonic touches, August Wahh’s ‘Elated’ makes a great case for both easy casual listening and soulful rumination. “The song was basically written on the spot,” the Sahara singer says. “crwn had a beat he played, and I wrote along it. On the same day, we recorded Elated.” As accidental magic goes, the spur-of-the-moment recording birthed an empowerment anthem that finds refuge on timelessness and global appeal. At a time when some of her contemporaries have chosen to embrace conventional approaches to songwriting, August Wahh channels her energy towards promoting self-worth as part of her personal mantra. She asks rhetorically “does it matter where I go?” whilealsoguaranteeing to own every decision she makes, tackling the age-old question with emotional openness and introspection. August Wahh’s new single “Elated” will be out on streaming and digital platforms worldwide on April 30, 2020. Friday, 01 May 2020 — After a four-year hiatus in making songs of his own, Rico Blanco returns with a rousing new anthem to help us deal with the uncertainty of the times. This Too Shall Pass is Rico Blanco’s first solo single in four years, as well as his first under Sony Music Philippines. The song was written from a place of discomfort and fear, witnessing how the much louder tremor of pandemic anxiety instantly changed our lives and left us with little time to mourn and move forward. With frontliners risking their lives with little protection, people going hungry, and the social order crumbling to pieces, Rico felt powerless by the situation. Hence, he had to forego his difficulties of living alone and coping with his own emotional troubles, as there was work to be done. He shares, “My efforts are little in light of a pandemic like this. As big as my imagination is for this song, I also feel that it’s not enough. But it’s what I can do and contribute as a musician.” This Too Shall Pass succeeds in repurposing music’s mission: Outside of its function as an entertainment fodder and a way to escape, it carries the resilience of the human spirit. In darkness, it shines brighter. The big, sprawling pop tune is his most personal to date, which he struggled over the course of two weeks to finish, and almost did not. “Some songs are anchored on truth, but they are wrapped and adorned in a lot of romanticized thoughts,” he shares. “This song is real, inwards and also outwards; it’s something that I really want to tell every single person. I wasn’t able to give a message to the frontliners, and I feel very guilty about this. I needed to finish this, and I want them to hear this. I know each one of us is going through something. I wrote this song as my way to reach out.”With sonic elements that span continents and a carefully honed production which he supervised himself, Rico’s latest single defies convention with a global sounding opus that incorporates musical dispatches and personal anecdotes. From samples of his nieces laughing culled from a family chat group to his attempt to blur the cultural lines by incorporating European techno, hip-hop beats, Asian riffs, Afro chanting, and Pinoy fiesta in a seamless, genre-bending extravaganza, This Too Shall Pass is ambitious in scope and sound design, but its heart is for the people who need light and love. There’s a sliver of joy in finding one of the most prolific artists emerge from a long silence. As Sony Music’s GM Philippines and VP Business Development Asia, Ms. Roslyn Pineda sums it up: “Music is important – we all know this.  But never more so than when we are faced with uncertainty, because it is then that the power of music becomes unquantifiable, almost limitless.  Music can make you feel you’re not alone. Music can save you from despair.  And so it is with a song like This Too Shall Pass.  It is so relevant to the times that it becomes a declaration, a prayer, a mantra -- all rolled into one.”Rico Blanco’s “This Too Shall Pass” is now available on all digital platforms worldwide. Watch out for the music video to be released soon.

FRIDAY, 1 MAY 2020, SINGAPORE - 17-year-old Singaporean electronic producer Foxela and singer-songwriter Chelsea Cara have released their brand new single ‘wanted you so bad’ today via Singapore indie label Umami Records.     Chelsea decided to write the song after experiencing rejection from someone she really liked. “I tried to show the dilemma I was facing and the painful choices I had to make,” the alt pop singer-songwriter shares, “I had all these emotions I was trying to make sense of.”   “Am I building a wall just to break it / am I strong enough to hold it down / but with one look, oh no you got me now”, sings Chelsea, building up to Foxela’s cathartic instrumental drop. She channels her frustrations with a delicate but soulful performance that feels at home with the song’s tropical house-inspired production.      “The drop is definitely my favourite part of the song”, shares Foxela, “I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone and I’m really happy with the result.”   ‘wanted you so bad’ is the second single the 2 classmates have worked on together, the first, ‘Live On’, was released earlier this year. Foxela will be keeping up the prolific pace of his work through 2020, with a new release planned for every month, including upcoming collabs with Dr. Boomy, DNAKM and Tyraz.   ‘wanted you so bad’ by Foxela and Chelsea Cara is available everywhere at this link: https://ffm.to/wantedyousobad   About Foxela The alias of 17-year-old Singaporean electronic producer Nigel Quah, Foxela is a non- Grammy-winning artist, crafting music with a blend of future bass, future house and a touch of pop. At the age of 17, Foxela became the youngest Singaporean to reach a million streams on Spotify.   Nigel ventured into the realms of music production at the tender age of 9, sharing his older sister’s Macbook when she didn’t need it for school. Since starting the Foxela project in 2016, his prolific pace has led to more than 40 releases already under his belt. In 2019, he released As You Do, which reached #13 on Spotify’s official Singapore Viral 50 chart, surpassing Billie Eilish and BTS, both of whom have yet to respond to his offers for a collaboration. This was followed by Wild Love which has more than 330K streams on Spotify.   Foxela has also been featured on various Spotify editorial playlists such as Top Hits Singapore, Singapore’s Top Acts, Electro Mix and Party Life.   “His is a sound that is informed by the titanic sweep of the spectrum of electronic music, where 'dance' is only a signifier and not the endgame.” - Hear65 (SG)   “With well over a dozen tracks under his belt, it is safe to say that you can expect more from this talented up-and-coming producer in the near future.” - Orange Magazine (PH) About Chelsea Cara A bright new upcoming talent hailing from Singapore, Chelsea Cara debuted in 2020 with her first feature, ‘Live On’, with Foxela and brittle bear. She is an aspiring singer-songwriter who mainly writes pop songs while exploring other genres such as r&b and lo-fi. Writing songs from her own personal experiences, she wishes to touch and inspire young hearts through her music.

Christian Bautista and Janine Teñoso have released the official music video for their recent collaboration "Bukas Wala Nang Ulan," which serves as a tribute video for multiple groups and individuals affected during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The video showcases various photos and videos of frontliners and survivors of COVID-19 in the Philippines, showing both the hardships and sacrifices of those battling the disease at the front lines, and the joys of how people are coming together as one community despite the hardships.   Although it is still early on into the pandemic, the video also features some triumphs of early survivors - showing hope that we can all surpass the situation, just as the song highlights.  Released on Tuesday, the music video also serves as a call to action for relief efforts, with parts of the streaming proceeds to be donated to Philippine Red Cross' Quezon City Chapter. Additionally, Universal Records has partnered with Help From Home (http://helpfromhome.ph), a coordination hub that connects individuals and institutions to those most in need: frontliners and communities at risk. Just like the song that plays throughout, its accompanying visuals are sure to uplift spirits and share some relief at the times we are facing today.  Bukas Wala Nang Ulan is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, and all digital stores worldwide under Universal Records. Janine Teñoso appears on the track and video courtesy of VIVA Records.

Looking back at 2017 and the roaring year it proved to be in terms of song releases, we heard an obvious move back to acoustic guitar and ukulele hits, and funky disco. Sometime in the shift, we got introduced to IV of Spades that—over the course of little time—managed to grow a huge following with their effortless disco bops. IV of Spades have been earning their stripes in the scene for a few years now, but they always give their fans something to look forward to. Instead of clogging the internet with a glut of releases, the band is prudent about the material they put out. Their new single "Sariling Multo (Sa Panaginip)" has just been released under Warner Music Philippines and we recommend that you put it on repeat. On releasing a new record in the midst of a pandemic, Zild Benitez said, "It was strange at first but I do think that music helps some people to get through rough times." "I don’t see anything strange about releasing music during these times. If anything, people have clung themselves more to music and arts as entertainment and comfort lately," Blaster Silonga added. “Sariling Multo (Sa Panaginip)” offers a neat reintroduction to IV of Spades' music, with a more rock-heavy instrumentation and an obvious departure from their previous tracks. Thematically, it explores letting go of old hurts, facing your demons, and being true to yourself. "It was one of the songs that started the upcoming album. Sonic State Audio (Christopher and Bri) mixed, mastered, and engineered this song. We’ve been working with them since 2017," Zild explained in an online interview. Taking their time proved to be a worthwhile endeavor. Despite having a limited discography, every IVOS release still strikes a chord in their old and new followers' hearts. The music itself is definitely enough to warrant a play. IV of Spades built a following with their multi-dimensional game plan. Though part of their distinctiveness, particularly their outfit and personal branding, is a gimmick, there's no denying that it works through equal advantages in musicianship, electronic production, and songwriting. With their earlier releases reminiscent of the old Manila Sound and the music they (or their parents) grew up with, IV of Spades continues to bring something different within the local landscape. That method fits in with their strategy to win over fans with their live performances, and enjoy the IVOS experience.

It's impossible not to talk about COVID-19 with the pandemic keeping us indoors. News is almost inescapable but in the thick of the gloom, musicians do their best to heal with us. Instead of playing on stage, they serenade us from their living room couches or inside home studios. Most of the studio work were stripped away for intimate solos. Songwriters perform alone with their instruments, or are occasionally virtually joined by their bandmates. Either singing covers of familiar tunes, or writing about the human spirit, a slew of songs has gone out to ride the wave of interest.     In times of collective hurt, we turn to songs. We find comfort in music and lyrics, and the sense of belonging that they impart. Ironically, the lockdown has already produced countless moments of togetherness. Clips of people singing from balconies and windows have gone viral. Neighbors singing political anthems have also made the rounds. These communal efforts bear a primal purity, demonstrating the power of music to unify.   Hip hop and R&B singer Quest hopes to raise awareness with his latest track 'Rise'. "The idea was to do an on the spot song writing with my Team Quest during our fund-raising live stream to #FightCOVID19. We ended up creating an anthem. So, please sing with us. Words are powerful. We are powerful. Let's all be beacons of hope during this season and let us all unite to rise to the occasion," he shared in his Youtube link description. According to him, 100% of his royalty from 'Rise' will be given to PGH Medical Foundation.       Since the pandemic, artists have covered or written songs ranging from cautionary to uplifting. As the cultural sector struggle to adjust to the 'new normal, our affinity to music proves unhampered. Songs and video clips continue to pour, constantly paying tribute to our front-liners. In our own little ways, we want to thank our medical professionals, sanitation workers, drivers, delivery guys, grocery employees, restaurant workers, and those in the forefront of keeping discipline. Thank you for your courage and dedication. Thank you for rising to the call of duty and selflessly working for the people.

Following the dreamy single “Comment,” which debuted early this January 2020, Barbie Almalbis continues to perfect her signature, swoony alt-pop sound with incisive introspection on her second single.“Iyong-iyo,” the latest track off her upcoming fourth studio album, tackles a story of strength, perseverance, and faith amidst insurmountable odds. The melodic pop tune is inspired by how the Tabing Ilog hitmaker’s cook found peace from surrendering everything to God during a very difficult time to bouncing back with another chance at life.Almalbis recounts:“This song is about Esperanza ‘Bing-Bing’ Maaño, our cook, who’s been in our family for a long time and even married our driver, Dandy. She suddenly fell very ill last year due to a diabetes complication and her medicines were not working. Needless to say, it was such a troubling time for her and everyone who loved her as her future seemed uncertain. She was brought to the hospital and had to undergo amputation surgery, and she shared that it was during this time that her faith in God became more real. While being wheeled into the operating room, she had many fears but suddenly felt peace as she surrendered everything to God. Thankfully, she had a successful surgery and recovered well, and after months of rehabilitation, she learned to walk again with a prosthetic leg.”Barbie Almalbis co-wrote “Iyong-iyo” with her partner Martin Honasan, who also shares songwriting credits on previous singles “Comment” and Tigre.” Bing-Bing’s determination and humility inspired the husband-and-wife tandem to write and produce the song.Recording of the track was done by sound engineer Magic Montano at Yellow Room Studios, formerly known as Tracks Studios in San Antonio Village, where most of the Barbie’s Cradle albums are made. “We had Nikko Rivera on keyboard, Jonard Bolor on drums, and Rommel dela Cruz on bass,” shares Almalbis about the musicians who contributed significantly in the recording process. “The main rhythm section was recorded live, and we did overdubs for vocals and guitars. I also recorded backing vocals at my home studio.”Barbie Almalbis’s “Iyong-iyo” is now out on various streaming and digital platforms worldwide via 12 Stone Records. It’s the second single off heras-yet-untitled album to be released this year. Stream it below!

For everyone that’s been part of the PULP SUMMER SLAM community throughout the Festival’s two-decade run, the return of Death Angel for PULP SUMMER SLAM XX: JUDGEMENT DAY feels like a full-circle moment. On May 16, 2020, at the Mall of Asia Arena, our blood brothers will be performing at the final installment of the festival, over a decade since they made history as the first international act to headline the Slam (PULP SUMMER SLAM VII: The Seven Deadly Sins in 2007). To have them by our side when we reach the end of the road, as they share the stage with the mighty Iron Maiden, truly makes for a beautiful and poetic ending.       “To be part of the final one after we’ve played it so many times it’s just an honor for us… we’re sad that it’s the final PULP SUMMER SLAM because we love that festival,” reflects lead guitarist Rob Cavestany in an exclusive interview with PULP Magazine. In between our first encounter in 2007 and what would be the final PULP SUMMER SLAM appearance for Death Angel, they have played the Festival three more times: PULP SUMMER SLAM XI: Ressurection, PULP SUMMER SLAM XIV: Children of the Damned, and most recently at PULP SUMMER SLAM XVII: Of Good and Evil. Truly, through the years, Death Angel have become an integral part of the history and legacy of Southeast Asia’s longest-running Metal festival.   Still, the final PULP SUMMER SLAM with Death Angel is more exciting than it is bittersweet. This far down the road, close to four decades since the band first emerged out of Daly City, California, more milestones deserve to be celebrated. The band has just released their ninth studio album Humanicide to high acclaim, and the title track has recently earned them their first GRAMMY nomination.    But perhaps the most important cause for celebration is the unbreakable connection that they’ve inevitably forged with their fans in the Philippines. Their integration into this unparalleled Philippine Metal tradition is something that is made even more meaningful by their Filipino descent. “Me, Ted, and half of Mark are Filipino. The original band had even two more Filipinos, so clearly, we’re known as this band of Filipinos. For us, playing in the Philippines, of course for our families, our parents, it’s like a big deal. And to us, it’s the Motherland, so that’s just amazing,” Cavestany tells PULP.   Death Angel are indeed making their way back to the Motherland to complete this beautiful circle and they will SEE YOU AT THE SLAM. Catch DEATH ANGEL along with IRON MAIDEN, BABYMETAL, DRAGONFORCE, and KING 810. Released last January 22 on all digital streaming platforms, the track "Nothing's The Same" by 4-piece alternative rock outfit Underclass will then showcase their music video on their official YouTube channel on March 14.Filmed and edited by John Sebastian Valderrama and with the direction of Shara Francisco, Underclass created a story tackling how one’s love will never be enough for someone who seeks something else. Starring Tyrone Tan and Thea Cuaresma, the music video of Nothing’s The Same shows how an individual can do anything for the person he loves, but she can still betray him for someone who can buy her everything instead.Getting to know UnderclassUnderclass is a pop-punk/alternative rock band giving out nostalgic tunes since 2016. The band was formed by Zach Alcasid (vocalist/rhythm guitarist) and Marcus Ambat (lead guitarist) who started performing together as a hobby back in junior high school. But their passion made them push their music career when they decided to finally write their original songs. After several changes with its band members, Underclass’s lineup is now complete with their drummer, Americus Inofinada and their bassist, Patricia Vendiola. Showcasing their love for pop punk and alternative rock, Underclass is making its way in the local indie scene with songs about relationships, teenage angst, and being young and naive.

MANILA, Philippines – In less than four years since “Location” blew up online, Khalid has achieved greater success worldwide, breaking records and selling stadiums on the strength of two studio albums, American Teen (2017) and Free Spirit (2019). More than a year ago, the American recording artist has performed to a sold-out crowd at the Araneta Coliseum on November 2, 2018 as part of the American Teen tour. Thanks to his arsenal of urban hits “Young, Dumb, and Broke,” “Love Lies,” “Talk,” and “Better,” the R&B sensation also found prominence on Philippine radio, joining the elite ranks of Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and LANY as one of the most played artists in mainstream/top 40 formats. His success on radio and concerts eventually caught up on streaming, with Spotify Philippines recently declaring Khalid as one of 2019’s most streamed male artists, placing second to British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. This year, the Platinum-certified artist has once again wielded his star power with the latest single, “Know Your Worth,” a collaboration with electronic music duo Disclosure. The third song off Khalid’s upcoming music project, according to Billboard, “floats over the soft electronic production” and blends easily with top 40’s massive love for sleek, disco-pop and R&B vocal styling. The bouncy tune has been a formidable force on local radio airplay, digital sales, and streaming for months, and continues to bolster its presence on key metrics, despite Khalid’s postponement of his second visit to the Philippines, along with the rest of Asia, on April 2, 2020 at the Mall of Asia Arena due to the recent advisories and restrictions regarding covid-19. For fans who are looking into celebrating the Love Lies singer’s string of hits, fret no more. Production outfit Bad Decisions and Sony Music Philippines are hosting an Urban Night featuring the songs of Khalid and more, happening on March 11, Wednesday at the Black Market in Makati City, from 10:30 pm onwards.Filipino R&B and hip-hop artists such as Zelijah and Malli are headlining the show, along with DJs Mikki dela Rea, Sensei Shaun, and Lane. For more details, check out the announcement on Sony Music Philippines’ Facebook page. “Know Your Worth” is now available on Spotify and other music streaming/download platforms worldwide.

Prepare to explore a a whole new world of music with Gracenote's newest album 'Small World.' The four-piece band, composed of Eunice Jorge (vocals), Jazz Jorge (Bass), Tatsi Jamnague (guitars), and EJ Pichay (drums), are ecstatic for the world to listen to their new offering, which aims to make the world smaller through the Gracenote brand of music.   Gracians and OPM fans alike will be delighted to hear all 15 tracks of the album, which was produced by Nick Lazaro of La Balls Studios. Small World features the carrier single "Kalawakan," along with "Here I Go Again," "Oh Darling!," "City of Vulnerability," "Paulit-ulit," and many more tracks that go through their journey in music.    The band considers the album a convergence of multiple points on a road map (one that also serves as the album cover): from their exploration of different musical genres,  creating their own sound from musical exploration, the people that went along with them on the journey, and their hopes to bring this music to a wider audience as well. Coinciding with the album's release last February 29, the band held the well-attended Small World album launch at Eton Centris, which was a night filled with out of this world fun, live performances of the album tracks, merch selling, and a secret session that will be revealed as promotions continue on for the album.

MANILA, Philippines – Here’s another upbeat jam that embraces a more eclectic sound. Alex Bruce’s second single “Go Crazy” under Sony Music Philippines is a collaboration with Filipino-Canadian songwriter and producer August Rigo, the other half of the songwriting duo behind BTS’s worldwide smash “Black Swan.”The sophomore track takes listeners to the Filipina rapper’s musical journey and the struggles that she has to overcome in her bid to discover a bigger world outside of dreams and opportunities. “The song is all about me dreaming big,” the young talent reveals in a statement. “It’s also about my vision of how the world will interact with me and my music. Literally, it’s about pushing through my blueprint and perspectives, no matter how hard it is.”Having written or produced songs for Justin Bieber, One Direction, Kehlani, and BTS to name a few, Rigo takes pride in being part of Alex Bruce’s upcoming release. The hitmaker who co-wrote three tracks on Justin Bieber’s multi-platinum album, My World 2.0 and brought a distinct flavor to several pop, R&B, and hip-hop releases of the last decade, once again enlisted his fellow songwriter and producer Vince Nantes to come up with a potential hit that appeals specifically to Bruce’s charismatic persona.“My management and I had been speaking to Sony Music’s Roslyn Pineda about possibly working together, and they thought that Alex and I would be a great fit,” Rigo shares about how he ended up writing for the rap sensation. “I wanted to make sure to capture the energy and vibe of Alex’s current music because I really loved what they had going on. I just wanted to incorporate some of my vibes with hers to create something real fresh and new but still true to her and what she has built thus far.” Alex returns the favor by expressing how truly honored she is working with the musician for the global stars. “Actually, I didn’t know him at first, until I was introduced to his body of work. I was a big fan of those artists he worked with. I remember the first time I chatted with him over Skype, and got amazed after finding out how down to earth this person is. He’s so kind, accommodating, and friendly despite his accomplishments. He just unlocked a new version of me.”Bruce previously released “Pull It Off,” her first single under Sony Music Philippines. It peaked at number 3 on Wave 89.1’s weekly countdown, setting the record for the youngest female artist to chart in the R&B/hip-hop radio station’s history.Alex Bruce’s latest single “Go Crazy” is now available on Spotify and other music streaming/download platforms worldwide.
