(L-R): Business Manager Thea Pollisco, Universal Records Managing Director Kathleen Dy-Go, Shanti Dope, Universal Records EVP Ramon Chuaying, and Business Manager/Producer DJ Klumcee Present during the signing were Shanti, Universal Records Executive Vice President Ramon Chuaying, Universal Records Managing Director Kathleen Dy-Go and Business Managers Thea Pollisco and Lester Vano (DJ Klumcee). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59UY2ZS4cko After joining the label in late 2017, Shanti became the breakout artist of 2018 through his smash hit "Nadarang." Since then, he has garnered over 120M streams on music streaming platform Spotify, with a number of well-known hits such as "Shantidope (feat. Gloc-9)," "Amatz," "Materyal," and "Mau." On top of this, the 18 year old has collaborated with some of the biggest artists in the OPM scene such as Gloc-9, Chito Miranda, KZ Tandingan, and IV of Spades, even having international collaborations with Disney-alum Sabrina Carpenter, Hawaiian-Filipino singer MiMi The Artist, and Krayzie Bone of Bone Thugz-n-Harmony. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dwfLtd3A5c At his young age, Shanti has already celebrated mainstream success, putting out impressive flows and beats with lyrics about his experiences of struggles, triumphs, and love that speaks volumes and resonates with many. This knack for songwriting and his unmatchable talent has since allowed him to bring his music in headlining shows across the US, Asia (Taiwan and Singapore), and Australia. With all these up his sleeve, the future looks even brighter for the "young king" of Pinoy rap.

Young Theatre Music Composer, Jen Darlene Torres, Introduces a New Flavor of Filipino Musical The music composer, lyricist, and originator of the reimagined "Biag ni Lam-Ang" did the Lam-Ang Musical back in 2017 for her thesis produced by UP Dulaang Laboratoryo and Project Mayheim. With little background in musical theories and methodologies but huge influence in underground and indie music - mostly of alternative rock and pop genre, Jen thought of merging these elements with the ethnic flavor of the play's theme. Jen Darlene V. Torres is an artist from Alab at Sinag Pilipinas, a community of independent musicians. She was the vocalist of an alternative rock band, Indio, and now ventures world music, collaborating with different artists. What to expect in Lam-Ang Musical While the story of Lam-Ang was set in pre-colonial period, one can always expect the traditional elements in music. To make the dramatic flow progressive and close to the heart of young audiences, the composer chose to counter the "old age" expectation by fusing the elements of modern Filipino music which involves popular music, alternative rock, and indie folk. She also mentioned that her music influences are Bullet Dumas, Itchyworms, Sugarfree, Ben & Ben. She also listens to ethnic rock bands, Anima Tierra and Talahib. About L Lam-ang is an ethno-epic musical that re-imagines and reinterprets Biag ni Lam-ang, the oldest among the folk epics of Luzon. This play, which aims to rediscover a significant portion of Philippine culture and heritage, is inspired by the published Ilocano version of Isabelo delos Reyes and Tagalog translations of Angel Acacio and Ariel Tabag. The musical takes us back to thetimes when we were our own selves by ourselves in our own little worlds. It chronicles the conquests of Lam-ang from the land of Nalbuan while envisioning local traditions that are being lost, ancient customs and lores that are being forgotten, and vestiges of our affluent past that are in danger of disappearing forever. The show is written by Eljay Castro Deldoc (new book and lyrics), with music and lyrics by Jen Darlene Torres. It is co-directed by Fitz Bitana and Marco Viaña (who also serves as set designer). Other parts of the artistic team were TJ Ramos (musical direction and sound design), JM Cabling (choreography), Bonsai Cielo (costume design), and Meliton Roxas Jr. (lighting design). Lam-ang will run from December 6 to 15 at the CCP Little Theater. Future Projects Jen Darlene is eyeing on making more new musicals featuring original Pinoy music starting 2020, with the help of Alab at Sinag and more underground music organizations.

Just before the year ends, five-piece shoegaze pioneer band Sonnet LVIII is set to drop their remastered album ‘Crossing Oceans’ along with the colored vinyl on December 30, 2019 at the 70’s Bistro in Anonas, Quezon City. From ‘Owe No Homage Unto The Sun’, the band repackaged the album with the help of Jerome Velasco, releasing it as ‘Crossing Oceans’ on the event.   LIVING ROOM SESSIONS     Inspired by Ride, Chapterhouse, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Adorable and My Bloody Valentine, childhood friends Dale, Ron and Elmer formed Sonnet LVIII in 1992. Ron's brother, Romel, and his friend Gonzalo joined a couple of months later. They hung out in Ron's living room and wrote songs incessantly, most of which were about their daydreams and reveries. Those living room sessions were turned a notch higher as the following years went by, where Sonnet LVIII were already playing in numerous clubs around Metro Manila including Club Dredd, Mayric's, Café Romeo and Music Museum and was an integral part of the famed Awakening and No Zone scenes.   Come 1996, Sonnet LVIII finally went into the studio to record a handful of songs which they hoped would be released soon after. Unfortunately, this wasn't meant to be. However, that didn’t stop them from pursuing their passion and continued to trudge along. In 2000, the band decided to singlehandedly release a 200-copy, sticker-labeled, self-produced four-song CD-EP called "Treasure Heaven". The song and the EP, created quite a buzz in the Manila music scene. "Treasure Heaven" received decent radio airplay, the CD-EP was sold out, and the band won the Best Unsigned Artist from the NU107 Rock Awards. That same year, a live version of "A Perfect Day" was included in "Uno Documento Compilo" from Documento Records. 2003 saw the inclusion of the recorded version of "A Perfect Day" in the compilation Dashboard Teddy version 1.0 from Dorothy Records.   In the subsequent years, Sonnet LVIII played very few gigs here and there. The members lived further away from each other and have been busy with life. However, they haven't lost contact. Sometime in 2011, instead of having all their recordings languish in obscurity, the band announced the digital release of Owe No Homage Unto The Sun, a collection of all the songs they recorded in the mid-1990's. However, it felt like an imperfect ending.   In 2017, Gonzalo passed away unexpectedly. The remaining members, though deeply devastated with the loss, became closer than ever before. Thus the reunion/album launch for Crossing Oceans this 2019.   P300 gets you in. Comes with a free drink. Their vinyl record will be priced at P1500.   Check out ‘Treasure Heaven’ by Sonnet LVIII here:

Finally, one of the Philippines’ most awaited Metal shows is about to happen as the arrival of today’s most renowned masked entity is imminent. PULP Live World is excited to announce SLIPKNOT LIVE IN MANILA, happening on March 29, 2020 at the Amoranto Stadium, Quezon City, as the newest addition to its extraordinary lineup of shows for the coming year.   This announcement comes at a time when the multi-platinum Grammy-winning act continues to send shockwaves through the global Metal community, having just released their widely anticipated sixth LP, We Are Not Your Kind. Released last August 2019 and highlighted by tracks like “The Birth of the Cruel,” “Solway Firth,” and the lead single “Unsainted,” Slipknot’s latest record has unsurprisingly left much of the music world in awe.   “With their latest studio album, Slipknot have released one of the strongest albums in their career,” remarks Consequence of Sound, with The Independent declaring, “The sheer ambition of We Are Not Your Kind is just as staggering as their seminal record Iowa – the dynamic might be even better.” Meanwhile, Billboard attests, “Iowa’s greatest musical export has only improved on its genre-busting sound.” The UK’s NME puts it simply: “The ‘Knot’s sixth album is an astonishing record.”   Slipknot emerged towards the end of the 20th Century from the US midwestern town of Des Moines, Iowa and quickly established themselves as the most enigmatic, provocative, and aggressive collective in contemporary music. 1999’s eponymous debut album is widely regarded as a modern-day classic and was honored by Metal Hammer as the “Best Debut of the Last 25 Years.” The release quickly racked up double RIAA platinum certifications in the US, with many of the band’s subsequent releases achieving platinum status around the globe.   To date, the band has been nominated for 10 Grammy Awards (winning in 2006 for “Before I Forget”), and has also scored 13 Platinum and 44 Gold record certifications around the world, with 30 million unit sales and over 2.5 billion YouTube views to date. Slipknot’s fanbase is as unwavering as it is ubiquitous — the band’s last studio album, 2014’s .5: The Gray Chapter, debuted Top 5 in the Official Album Charts of 19 countries around the world including the US (#1), UK (#2), Japan (#1), Australia (#1), Russia (#1) & Germany (#2).   With the arrival of We Are Not Your Kind came more feats to Slipknot’s name. It marked the band’s third consecutive #1 Album on the Billboard 200. Meanwhile, all music videos off the album, directed by M. Shawn Crahan, have each trended worldwide on YouTube. “Unsainted” was at #1 worldwide for a full 24 hours. Slipknot have also amassed over 52 million views in only two months. The nine-piece act also shook the world with the live debuts of “Unsainted” and their 2018 single “All Out Life” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, both of which have become the show’s most viewed music performances of 2019 on YouTube.   Fans of the band all over the world, Maggots as they are called, have continued to revere the band’s inscrutable trademark of theatrics that’s written all over a kind of music that has allowed them to change the face of modern heavy metal as we know it. The same can be said of Filipino fans of Slipknot, who have ceaselessly waited and clamored for this upcoming concert 15 years since the band was supposed to perform in the Philippines for the first time.   Now, about a decade and a half since the ill-fated show, Slipknot are finally on their way to the Philippines for the first time ever to bring their visually arresting, incendiary, and spectacular live show to the hallowed grounds of Amoranto, a venue that has witnessed the exponential and almost incomprehensible growth of the Filipino metal community through the years. This Manila show, which has been years and years in the making, will also be a ‘must-see’ event in what is shaping up to be one of the most exciting periods in the Iowa band’s 20-year career to date.   SLIPKNOT LIVE IN MANILA, happening on March 29, 2020 at the Amoranto Stadium, Quezon City, is proudly presented by PULP Live World. Gates open at 5:00PM and the show starts at 7:00PM. Tickets go on sale on November 23, 2019, 10AM through SM Tickets, TicketNet, and AirAsia RedTix. Tickets are priced at P2,220 (White Zone), P5,550 (Black Zone), and P6,660 (Red Zone). Ticketing charges apply. 2020 is shaping up to be another massive year in music as PULP Live World continues to mark more momentous milestones. Redefining the Philippine concert experience for two decades now since its inception in 1999, PULP has every intention of lining up the coming year with the loudest shows, the most explosive experiences, and the fondest memories. PULP kicks off 2020 with an old-school rock and roll show—Canadian emo/post-hardcore mainstays Silverstein are headed our way for their first Manila show in about eight years. SILVERSTEIN 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY IN MANILA, with special guests DEFYING DECAY, takes place on January 12, 2020, Sunday, at the Skydome, SM City North EDSA.   Shane Told (vocals), Paul Koehler (drums), Josh Bradford (guitar), Billy Hamilton (bass), and Paul Marc Rousseau (guitar) are making their way to Manila with a milestone of their own to share with their Filipino fans. The band is set to play their iconic album Discovering The Waterfront in its entirety along with other hits from their arsenal of anthems throughout their 20-year run as a band. Forming in Ontario, Canada at the turn of the millennium, Silverstein went on to become stalwarts of the emo/post-hardcore scene, being among the longest-reigning bands to be at the forefront of the genre. With nine studio albums to their name (a 10th release, Redux, being a recent independently-released compilation of re-recorded songs from the band’s first ten years), the upcoming 20 Year celebration is made more meaningful by the many career-defining moments that they’ve had as a band. From the time Silverstein broke out into the music scene with their debut album When Broken Is Easily Fixed (“Bleeds No More,” “Giving Up,” “Red Light Pledge”) in the year 2003, the Juno-nominated band has proven to be one of the most consistent bands around, not just with how they’ve released an album every two years without fail, but also with the way they’ve outdone themselves album after album. Now with over a million records sold worldwide, Silverstein fans appreciate the band’s music more with every album release. While later albums like I Am Alive In Everything I Touch (2015) or Dead Reflection (2017) are generally as favored as the more classic Silverstein records, if not even more, one album that will perhaps always be a special one is their second album Discovering The Waterfront (2005). With tracks like “My Heroine,” “Call It Karma,” and “Smile In Your Sleep,” this was an album that brought Silverstein more mainstream success during their early years as a band. To hear it live front to back, in 2019, would be quite the emotional experience as we celebrate 20 years of Silverstein in one very special and nostalgic show. Warming up the stage for Silverstein as support act are Defying Decay from Bangkok. Touring to promote their latest release Metamorphosis, the Thai alternative metal act are also returning to the Philippines after supporting Motionless in White on their UK tour towards the end of 2019. They are also off to Japan in January to share the stage with Slaughter To Prevail, but not ‘til after their Manila comeback with Silverstein. Presented by PULP Live World, SILVERSTEIN 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY IN MANILA, with special guests DEFYING DECAY, happens on January 12, 2020, Sunday, at the Skydome, SM City North EDSA. Gates open at 6:00PM. We rock and roll by 8:00PM. Tickets go on sale on September 30, 2019 at all SM Tickets outlets nationwide and online at www.smtickets.com. PULP SUMMER SLAM, Southeast Asia's longest-running Metal festival, celebrates an unbroken two decades of live music performances and is still the only contemporary Philippine-based annual music festival ranked and recognized by the prestigious Festival 250.Once again ranking on the worldwide list, PULP SUMMER SLAM has moved up to #225 from its previous rankings of #229 in 2017 and #249 in 2016. Festival 250 is an annual project from Festival Insights, an online B2B publication focused on the international festival industry.Promoter Vernon Go says that this will likely be the final PULP SUMMER SLAM and has aptly given it an ominous theme: JUDGEMENT DAY. "I believe having IRON MAIDEN headline our 20th year of PULP SUMMER SLAM is not only historic but certainly poetic for Metal fans," says Go. "It is certainly a beautiful ending to two decades of Metal mayhem in the Philippines, especially since it is their only Southeast Asian stop and the only East Asia tour date outside of Japan."“We’re delighted to finally come to The Philippines and present the Legacy Of The Beast Tour to all our fans there! We’re immensely proud of this show and we’ve had great reactions from the many fans who came to see us in Europe, North America, Mexico, and South America,” comments Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson. “The production for the PULP SUMMER SLAM Festival is the same as the other shows on this tour so far and is based on our mobile game The Legacy of the Beast which takes various incarnations of Eddie into many different Maiden Worlds. This inspired us to put together a stage show to take our fans through different Worlds and experiences set to appropriate songs,” he adds, giving fans a glimpse of what to expect during their headlining performance at the SLAM. Hailed by global rave reviews, the tour’s production, and setlist is inspired by Maiden’s free to play mobile game of the same name which is available on iOS and Android platforms at www.ironmaiden.com/play.“We feel we ended up with a very strong and well-balanced set mixing songs we haven’t played in many years like ‘Flight Of Icarus,’ ‘Sign Of The Cross,’ and ‘The Clansman’ with songs we know the fans want to hear like ‘The Trooper,’ ‘2 Minutes To Midnight,’ ‘The Number Of The Beast,’ ‘Fear Of The Dark,’ ‘Run To The Hills,’ ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ and others, reflecting the journey through the different themes of the show,” bassist and founding member Steve Harris adds, speaking about how the band came up with the tour’s monstrous setlist. “We’re excited to bring this show to Manila because our fans there have never seen these songs performed live before so we can’t wait to play them.”Fans have been anticipating the ticket prices for this monumental event that also features four other incredible Metal bands: Death Angel, BABYMETAL, Dragonforce, and KING 810.Happening on May 16, 2020, at the Mall of Asia Arena, tickets to PULP SUMMER SLAM XX: Judgement Day will go on sale on November 30, 2019, 12:00NN through SM Tickets and AirAsia Red Tix. As part of the multiple celebrations commemorating an important milestone in Philippine and global history, the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) partners with PhilPop to mount music events and activities that mark the 500th anniversary of Victory of Mactan in 2021. Under the partnership agreement, the country’s premier songwriting competition will be the screening committee responsible for curating a 9-track compilation album that pays tribute to the triumph of Lapulapu in the famous Battle of Mactan.   Underrated gems Instead of relying on star power and mega-hits, Dinah Remolacio, the Executive Director of PhilPop highlights the importance of empowering underrated musical talents from all over the country whose artistic blueprint and songwriting talent stand out from the ordinary. “With guidance from our distinguished crop of industry professionals and award-winning mentors, this year’s selection strikes a balance between theme and form. I’m proud to say that the compilation record serves its function in discovering the future of homegrown music.”   National Artist and PhilPop Music Fest Foundation Board Member and Bootcamp Master Ryan Cayabyab feels the same way about the songwriters and interpreters behind the compilation record. “It’s an honor to discover promising new acts who are capable of writing compositions that could impact people’s lives. Not only are they defying and challenging trends; these songwriters are also finding ways to develop their own artistic stamp while making sure that the material adheres to specific requirements of NQC in terms of content and vision.”   As an esteemed institution that provides a world-class and sustainable songwriting curriculum, PhilPop has handpicked eight songs from the PhilPop Bootcamp 2019 that it hosted on various venues such as Batangas, Tagum and Lingayen. The final song, which will be a collaboration among PhilPop coaches, will be launched soon.   “PhilPop was one of the institutions that came to mind when asked who we want to work with in producing the Quincentennial songs,” says NQC Head of Secretariat Ian Alfonso. “This time, we want to come up with a streaming playlist that best represents the collective musical taste of this generation, while also taking into consideration the Filipino-ness of pop music and the celebration of the quincentennial.”   Future plans Aside from the National Quincentennial Commemorations Playlist which will be out on streaming and digital platforms soon, NQC and PhilPop is currently looking into producing music shows and concerts as part of its efforts to promote the 500 years of achievement in circumnavigating the planet for the first time. “One of the objectives of the National Quincentennial Committee is to have multi-disciplinary activities, and to have PhilPop among our partners is also a way of support to OPM industry,” Alfonso points out.   Alfonso recently shared the partnership’s plans to join the international community in celebrating a 500-day countdown to the Victory of Mactan in Lapulapu City, Davao City and Manila. “As we approach 2021, expect activities that will elevate public's interest to the World our ancestors had, debunking misconceptions and myths that they were savages and uncivilized. Our very own Lapulapu will be the heart of the celebration, for he was among the rallying Symbol which Rizal and the heroes of the Philippine Revolution evoked as our nation was being founded in 1898.”   PhilPop Bootcamp 2019 is an initiative of the PhilPop Music Foundation, chaired by Mr. Manny V. Pangilinan. This year's PhilPop boot camp is co-presented by Maynilad and Meralco with Smart as a major sponsor.
