The band claimed that they used their heartbreaks and traumatic experiences to write the song in the hopes that their audience will be able to relate to it. The term "Zombies" was coined to describe things that continue to exist even after people have given up on them and that we continue to experience even after they have come to an end. The song was first written in 2014 as a love song, but as it evolved, it came to represent the final moments of a failing romance.
