Hiwaga: The Mystery Of Robster Evangelista’s Many Talents

Robster Evangelista has an uncanny, borderline mysterious ability to literally be able to do it all: radio personality, songwriter, author, speaker – and most of all, storyteller.

Though his initial claim to fame in the Philippines’ music industry was his seven years as a station manager for iFM Manila, Robster is now signed as a singer-songwriter under RJA Productions. At first, he was hired solely for his songwriting services, but his demo of one of his own creations, Sino Ba Sa Atin, impressed label executives so much that he was asked to sing the song himself. For Robster, to release his own composition as a single carries meaning beyond just bragging rights: “you know the emotions [of the song] so well that you can do justice to it when you sing it yourself.”

On January 30, Robster released his second single under RJA Productions, Hiwaga. The song is an homage to 90’s OPM: easy to sing along to and suited for chill listening sessions, but a song that carries its heart on its sleeve. “Love moves in mysterious ways…[it] will catch you unaware and leave you baffled, asking yourself why you fell in love with a certain person. But [you have] no complaints, since you want that person to love you in return.”

However, not only is Robster a vocalist and songwriter, but he was also a guitarist for the band Haranya. Skilled at time management, Robster is a bona fide creative powerhouse. About his diverse array of talents, Robster has this to say: “It takes discipline [to nurture talent]. Thus, my principle is one thing at a time…when I set out to do one thing, I focus on it entirely.”

Robster is quickly catching fire as a major songwriter in the Philippines. Two songs written by him, Stuck and Patawad Sinta, were sung by fellow rising star Myko Mañago. Robster even wrote for legendary alt-rock band Parokya Ni Edgar on their song Amats, as well as for hugely popular dancer, singer & TV personality Vhong Navarro in his song Mr. Papabol.

This prolific output has resulted in big break after big break for Robster, singing jingles and even the theme song of a movie starring the legendary love team of Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa. Robster says: “I consider myself very blessed to reach a level where I am asked to write a jingle or theme song. I just scribble down all the important messages the client wants to convey. Or, if it is writing a song for an artist, I ask for their profile, target audience, style and repertoire…I often fill up three pages in my notebook [in the process]!”

Robster has also won accolades for his craft: he was a winner of the PMPC Star Awards for Music in 2012 for his novelty song, Blind Item. However, beyond his accolades and achievements, Robster considers himself a storyteller at heart: as a radio personality, Robster created and produced the story-based segment Mga Kuwento ni Lolo Barbers, and he is even an author of motivational books whose titles sell themselves: How To Tame the Butterflies in your Stomach and How To Talk to Anyone Easily.

Says Robster of his many blessings and achievements: “I’ve always felt that when we believe we can do something, with God's grace, we can do it. As a child, I was fascinated with performers and the positive feelings they give their audiences, as well as how they impacted them. I want to make people feel the same way.”

Robster’s second single Hiwaga is available on Spotify, Apple Music and other digital platforms. Listen to the song here and watch the lyric video here.
