Album Review: Bloodshedd - Spare No One

Fuck it. Bloodshedd have released a Thrash Metal album extravaganza that I’ll probably still listen to after many years when the apocalypse comes. Here we have an album that is a slab of excellent Filipino Thrash Metal.

I’ve only listened to them live, and my initial impression of the band, is the same as with a lot of other Filipino Metal bands playing the streets of Manila, their sound deserves to be on a bigger stage, with better equipment. In “Spare No One”, the drumming leaves me asking for more. The drumming keeps my attention on the music throughout the album. A drastic comparison to their live performances where the bass drum can’t be heard. A pity since their live performances are very head bangin’ entertaining.

Although it may sound that I’m talking all praise about the album, I couldn’t help but want more growls into the music. Don’t get me wrong, Jojo’s vocal performance is relentless and has easily become one of my favourites in the Filipino Metal scene, but in its entirety, someone doing some backing guttural vocals on some of the songs would have just hit the spot for me.

Time will tell when the album grows on me enough for me to just sing along to it. One thing’s for sure, I now need to listen to their debut album and see what happens from there.

Dave Grohl Joins the Rolling Stones Onstage

The Rolling Stones continued with the high-profile guest performers last night at the Honda Center in Anaheim when Dave Grohl joined the rockers onstage to play guitar and sing on "Bitch."

As Charlie Watts lit off the quick fill that starts the song, Grohl strutted out from the shadows between Watts' drums riser and the organ rig. After swapping a quick lick or two with Ronnie Wood, Grohl joined Mick Jagger at center stage, where he played guitar and sang lead on a verse from the 1971 Sticky Fingers tune.

The Rolling Stones Offer Plenty of Surprises in Los Angeles Tour Kickoff

Grohl, the Foo Fighters frontman, is the latest in a string of guests who have joined the Stones onstage on their ongoing "50 and Counting" tour. Gwen Stefani and Keith Urban sat in during the band's tour opener in Los Angeles earlier this month, and Tom Waits and Katy Perry have appeared as well.

The Stones' brief run last year in London, New York and New Jersey also included a roster of all-star collaborators, including Eric Clapton and, in a tour-ending blowout, Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen. The 50 and Counting tour continues through June 24th in the U.S. before the band heads to England for a handful of shows at Glastonbury and in Hyde Park in London.

The Doors icon Ray Manzarek dies of cancer

Iconic Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek has died at the age of 74, it’s been confirmed.

He passed away in a clinic in Germany after having fought cancer of the bile duct for some time. He was surrounded by his family.

Manzarek founded the band with Jim Morrison, Robby Krieger and John Densmore in 1964. They became icons of the psychedelic era, having found the inspiration for their name in a poem by William Blake: “If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.”

A statement from his family says:

“Ray passed away today at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife Dorothy and his brothers Rick and James.

“The Doors formed when Ray had a chance encounter on Venice Beach with poet Jim Morrison. LA Woman, Break On Through To The Other Side, The End, Hello, I Love You, and Light My Fire were just some of the band’s groundbreaking songs.

“After Morrison’s death in 1971, Ray went on to become a best-selling author and a Grammy-nominated recording artist in his own right. In 2002, he revitalized his touring career with Doors guitarist and long-time collaborator, Robby Krieger.”

Guitarist Krieger says:“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate. I’m glad to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.”

The Manzarek family, who have asked for their privacy to be respected, would like well-wishers to contribute to the cancer charity StandUp2Cancer.

Interview With Antimano

1. Please introduce yourself?

We’re Antimano. A pop rock quartet coming from all corners of Manila. Biboy Rempillo on vocals, Tati Abellanosa on guitar, Pipo Estioko on bass and Allan Floralde on drums.

2. Why this band named (Antimano)? What’s the story behind it?

"Antimano" is a tagalog word meaning "beforehand" or "in anticipation". There's no particular story behind it we just agreed to pick the name. It's a catchy tagalog word to start every sentence. "Antimano, alam na!"or "Antimano, swak na swak!"

3. How long have you all known each other? How did you meet? Band history.

Biboy, Tati and Allan have known each other for a couple years before Antimano, we were former work colleagues. Pipo came in after a bassist search prior to our first band meeting. After a few rehearsals, we clicked right on and decided to do gigs.

4. How old are you guys? Are you still studying? Work? How are you balancing your time between the band and your studies/work?

Tati's the youngest. She's on her mid 20's. While the rest of us is on our 30's We do have our dayjobs. Most of us work in the field of advertising. Pipo is a government employee and is currently finishing law.

5. Please describe your music.

Until now, we really find it hard to describe it. We just relied on our listeners on how they make out of it. Some say our music sounds anthemic and soudtracky, the ones you hear during the rolling credits at the end a film. Some say some of our songs sound theatrical and some find it Pinoy 90's with a tinge of british sound somewhere in between.

6. What differs you from other bands?

It would be an understatement if we tried to say our difference from others knowing that the scene is bursting at the seams with independent artists claiming to have a unique sound and persona. But taking our music into a more toned down technicality to make more emphasis on emotion and wordplay, and taking that emotion onstage for a lively performance would deem us enough to say that we have a different plate to offer on the table for our audience.

7. Who/what are your influences for playing music?

We have diverse sounds that we listen to prior to Antimano.
Biboy is a big fan of Rivermaya, The Killers, Queen and the british sounds The Smiths, The Thrills, Keane, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Redlightcompany, etc.
Tati likes grunge music. Nirvana, Foofighters, STP, Chevelle, etc.
Pipo is more into the OPM stuff. Big fan of the Eheads, sugarfree, urbandub, Franco, Mayonnaise
Allan is into the heavier stuff, Metallica, RATM, Dream Theater, etc.

8. What bands have you been listening to lately?

Were currently listening to our fellow indiebands. We support them and love their music by heart. Talata, Sentido, Autotelic, September Issue, Philospo, Beia stone, Runbynine, Projectbased and many more.

9. What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.)

We are currently working on our first full length album and planning to launch another music video thie year for a song from our first EP. We want to spread our music on a wider range of listeners and hopefully our music will reach more people regardless how we do it.

10. Achievements to date?

We released our first six-track EP called “Satellites” last December 2011 and also debuted our first music video for our carrier track “Beautiful Burns” on PinoyMyx hit charts on the same year.
Our track “Ang Wakas” also had its shares of airplays on local radio.

11. Who is the leader of the band?

There is no official “leader of the band” person in the group. We keep the equality and we’ve been sticking to it ever since.

12. Who does the lyrics? What influences you in writing the lyrics?

Biboy does the majority of the writing. As a band, one of the things that we've grown from is performing live on stage and experiencing how the audience react to the words of the song we perform and vice versa. When we write lyrics, we always keep those experiences in mind. We make sure we tell a good story with all the twist and hooks in it and we imagine how moments in a song would connect emotions to the audience.

13. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

We sing of stories about life and love, the unsung emotions and conflicts.

14. Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

We write the lyrics first. In some cases the melody comes in first. We record a draft or a demo of the song to see if it grows on us and for familiarity. When we're happy about it to the point of raping the play button for weeks, then we hit the studio and we jam on it and put our own different moments and silver linings on the song. Then we take it on stage to experience how it feels like performing the song with an audience. If it feels good. The song's a keeper.

15. Have any of your songs been published? Where?

Not yet.

16. Is OPM dead?

A Big NO! Were here to keep it ALIVE!.

17. DIY or are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal? (Why?)

If the opportunity presents itself for an independent or major label to offer a deal, why not take it given that the offers best interest is mutual. Its a fact that going mainstream is the best way to gain wider audience. For now, DIY is the way to go for us. We enjoy the infinite freedom.

18. Do you want to earn money for playing music or just want to play for the love of it? Are you seeking fame and fortune? why?

Well if it allows us to quit our day jobs and focus on the thing we love the most which is music making and performing live. Fame and fortune well actually is not a priority. But i think the power and the influence must be overwhelming. It must be good and bad at the same time.

19. How do you feel about sellout accusations when bands become good/popular?

Being a sellout is not that bad. I mean this could help in rebuilding OPm music. We are more in opposition to OPM artists who cover foreign music and sell it.

20. Should music be distributed free or not?

Ideally it should be free.

21. How did you sell your CD’s/Audio Files?

We just hand them out personally on gigs.

22. What can you say about Philippine Piracy?

In the occurrence of the overwhelming availability of our music in different media, left alone the internet, the idea of piracy has started to become irrelevant. In the majority of independent artists versus the mainstream, sharing music on the internet has become the artists ultimate tool. We think it helps the listeners be more conscious about what more the OPM scene has to offer. Personally anti-piracy applies to the musicians who want to protect their investments. Well its not bad. But if you want your music to be heard more, give it for free. If you don't want it stolen, don't sell it.

23. Any unforgetable gig/show experiences you have been encountered?

Our most unforgettable was our EP launch gig. Our performance was accompanied by an awesome string quartet. Other unforgettable shows… when the crowd starts singing the words of our song.

24. Your Worst gig experience?

During an outdoor concert, the audio technicians turned our volume down to an inaudible level during our set, because the nearby neighborhood was complaining about the "noise". We couldn’t hear what we were playing/singing onstage. The audience was ogling at us like " what the hell are these losers doing on stage". It was embarrassing.

25. Should marijuana be legalized?

Decriminalized rather than legalized.

26. What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

If you want to form a band... Grab your real friends as members or be friends first with your members before you hit them chords and chops. It will save you the trouble of disbanding too early.

27. What have you learned so far, being in Antimano?

That you don't actually have to be technically good at playing your instrument. Play by your heart and your ear and of course good songwriting will never be out of trend.

28. Your favorite curse word?

Justin Bieber!!!

29. Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?

We like to thank our friends and family for letting us rock.

30. For you what is true rakista?

A true rakista is a musician or a non-musician who listens to, dances to, breathe, eat, drink, dress, talks real talk, walks the walk and supports OPM music and most of all respects fellow rakistas.

Applying Mental Toughness Daily is Not Easy

Sports psychology experts often talk about the importance of learning mental toughness to improve your performance. However, my 15 years of teaching the mental game to students makes me think that understanding mental toughness skills is not the whole enchilada. To be successful with mental toughness training, athletes must learn how to apply it.
You can be taught to improve concentration and focus all day long. You may understand the information and concepts by hearing it or reading about it (see 揟he Focused Athlete?at peaksports foakleys.com). However, until you actually are able to put the focusing skills into practice and competition foakley Holbrook Sunglasses, you can抰 make any progress and *really* learn mental toughness.
If you're serious about getting the most from what you've learned, then you must be sure to apply consistently the mental skills you understand on a conceptual level. This is the biggest challenge in my work ?helping athletes apply the concepts.
Take confidence, for example. Teaching athletes and coaches strategies to enhance confidence (such as how to fight doubt) and how to put it into action is the first step fake oakleys. The best athletes truly feel, sense, and believe in what they see in their minds *and* have total control over the images when they use visualization. When you can join your mental pictures with true confidence, then you have power to change your performance by just using your mind.

revenge of the 50 foot Werewolf!Vampire: Bloodlines is a RPG I enjoyed immensely. Try Vampires and Werewolves RPGs, The Wild Vampire Roleplay, Loved the Vampire roleplay too.There's something uniquely satisfying about being evil. This is certainly not a game for either kids, or the faint hearted; but for anyone who thinks having a taste for claret and no pulse sounds cool, this is the game for you.

I especially appreciated some of the humorous moments foakley, much needed in the grim setting.Spectacular spells. When I got this game I just thought it looked interesting and didn't quite know what to expect. Hands down, the best vampire game to be made thus far. Great tale line as nicely as interactive functions as far as objects and npcs you interact with.

Tim Lambesis` Lawyer Blames Steroids In Murder-For-Hire Plot

As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis returned to the Vista Superior Court Friday (May 17) for a bail hearing relating to his alleged-murder-for-hire plot against his estranged wife and more details about the case were revealed in the process.

According to UTSanDiego.com, during Friday’s hearing the rocker’s attorney, Thomas Warwick, argued that his client had gotten into bodybuilding and healthy eating and later began taking nutritional supplements as a paid product spokesman. At some point he also began taking steroids, which the lawyer claimed were to blame for his behavior in instigating the murder-for-hire plot.

Warwick stated, “His thought processes were devastatingly affected by his steroid use.” According to NBCSanDiego.com, the lawyer added, “It has been a terrible tragedy. He was a very caring, gentle man [before taking steroids] and we need to get him back.” Lambesis reportedly ballooned in size from 170 pounds to 220 pounds and in his lawyer’s words “was not the same person. He was irritable and lost God.” A forensic psychiatrist who consulted for the defense stated that the vocalist got “roid rage” after using steroids.

Also during Friday’s hearing, Warwick was successful in getting Lambesis’ bail lowered, but not as far as was hoped. The lawyer asked for the bail to be lowered to $250,000 from the $3 million it was initially set at, but Judge David Berry only dropped it to $2 million. Warwick told the court that even with the decrease in bail, his client was still not able to pay the amount.

The 32-year-old has remained behind bars since May 7, accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill his estranged wife. However, the hitman in question was an undercover police officer.

Prosecutor Claudia Grasso told the court that Lambesis handed the officer an envelope containing $1,000 in cash, his wife’s address and the gate security codes. Grasso added that the vocalist did not flinch when told that the hit would cost $20,000.

Tim and Meggan Lambesis split last year after eight years of marriage and adopting three kids from Ethiopia. The prosecutor claimed that the vocalist told his wife in an email last summer that he no longer loved her and no longer believed in God. She also apparently learned that he had been having affairs. The singer’s wife filed for divorce in September.

Stone Temple Pilots have released a new track, Out Of Time, which features Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington in place of fired frontman Scott Weiland. Hear it below.

STP announced in February that they’d “terminated” Weiland’s contract. But since then, he’s been insisting both that he wasn’t fired and that he can’t be fired, arguing: “I started the band. There’s certain clauses in place that keep that from happening.”

The band unveiled their current lineup and their latest song at LA radio station KROQ’s annual weenie roast over the weekend, taking the crowd by surprise. Bennington later said: “I’ve loved STP since I was 13 years old. When the opportunity came up to so something creative with them I jumped at the chance. The guys in Linkin Park have been incredibly supportive of me undertaking this project while I’ve continued to work on new music with LP.”

Guitarist Dean DeLeo added: “We know Linkin Park will always be his priority, but we thought it would be cool to try something together. We managed to find the time to record a song and we’re all really happy with the result.”

It’s not clear whether the band plan any further activity together.

You may have heard Panahon Na Naman Ng Harana from your friends or may have seen its video on YouTube, and I know you’ve been a little doubtful if you have heard it right. I feel you, dude. I even tried to correct my friend. “No, bro. Hindi yun Panahon Na Naman Ng Harana. Ano yan, pinaghalong Harana saka Panahon Na Naman?! Rivermaya and PNE?!” I got a “Yup. Exactly.” as an answer. My friend’s right.

Music icons Rico Blanco and Chito Miranda came out with a music video for their mashed up collaboration entitled “Panahon Na Naman Ng Harana”. It is a fusion of Rivermaya’s Panahon Na Naman (Trip) in 1996 and of Parokya Ni Edgar’s Harana (Buruguduystunstugudunstuy) in 1997.

This new collaboration was uploaded by Rico Blanco on his YouTube channel, RicoBlancoTV. It was captioned “trip trip lang” so overwhelming acceptance from the fans weren’t really expected. Netizens were all excited as this is another great music from our local artists, hoping they can collaborate on more songs.

Spongecola’s new music video Pick Your Poison is climbing up the charts this month, making it the new “in”! Pick Your Poison is the current single of Spongecola’s 6-tracked EP entitled District.

In the music video, the band was fooling around with beach balls and inflatable pools, together with some friends. Nice, huh? I think this is Spongecola’s not-too-late entry this summer. People splashing some water and all that happiness will give you much of a summer, definitely.

As for Spongecola’s music, the band has stayed to its core, but made a few changes in the beats and the riffs, giving this song a new edge.
