Yes, prayers are always heard by the one above but based on experience, the granting of prayers part takes time. So, in my opinion, resorting to just praying (well i suppose itis an act of dedication to religion or whatever) would not be a practical thing to do in case of zombie attacks.

THE FOLLOWING IS A WORK OF FICTION, A PRODUCT OF A BORED AND IMBALANCED MIND.
FOR ZOMBIE FANS ONLY. NO SACRILEGE IS INTENDED.

Suppose i'm a leader of a band of survivors and we're to hole up in a church,
i would choose a cathedral of a wealthy parish. its relatively bigger size would have the ff. advantages:

1. the building proper would definitely have a second, and sometimes, third floor.
having the higher ground is always a tactical advantage in any type of warfare.
(watch the war classic, Operation: Daybreak starring Timothy Bottoms)

2. its belfry would surely house enormous bells. so anytime we do a quasimodo -and it
need not be during angelus- any passing potential rescue would hear us miles away.

3. the cavernous interior of the building proper would amplify any sound from within.
this could serve as an intruder alert system inherent to the structure.
if one is agoraphobic, a survivor can always sleep inside the confessional.

4. the longer pews can be transformed into unpassable barricades. placing it in strategic
entry points like (duh?) gate would secure the church grounds. so, board the gates!

5. the crypt could be used to quarantine any infected survivors. or anyone of them who
disagrees with me. he he he.

6. the guard house could yield a .38 service revolver or two - assuming the security
guards are already dead and have already been zombified.

7. in the absence of a gun, the sacristy could be an armory of improvised melee or range
weapons:

the long staff/crucifix (used in processions) - sharp enough to spear a zombie in
the head with a swift and resolute
thrusting motion. preferable entry
point is the eye.

the metallic candle holders - blunt and hard enough to bash a zombie cranium

unused and empty ciborium - prior to use in combat, it must be ascertained that
this vessel cup for consecrated hosts is empty or
hasn't been used recently lest we commit sacrilege.
just like the metallic candle holders, it can be used
to bash a zombie skull.

incense - whirling it parallel to the ground, and we've got an unassailable 360
degree defensive stance. the incense holder itself can be reinforced
with nails or spikes. there's also an option to soak the charcoal with
mompo wine and lighting it up with a match. so whether it's used like a
medieval morning star or a flaming chain whip ala ghostrider, damage done
to a zombie will be extensive.

half-filled mompo wine bottles - could substitute for molotov cocktail. this
incendiary could use torn cassock cloth as wick,
shards from a broken stained-glass window as
shrapnels, and the wine itself as gasoline
substitute. perfect for throwing from the second
or third floors to maximize firing range.

lifesize statues/images - this could be hardwork considering their weights. but
placing them on the edge of the second or third
balconies, and lining them up like beautiful gargoyles
might prove useful. in the event of a church grounds
perimeter breach and the cathedral itself being
undersieged, we could push each one of these statues to
crush portions of the undead horde below...then
genuflect, make the sign of the cross, and ask for
forgiveness for the unwanted but necessary iconoclasm.

metallic foldable chair - this is a staple in the realm of entertainment
wrestling. during a zombie apocalypse, we've a chance to
use it for real. despite the even surface of its flat
side when folded, it's also solid enough to wonk a zombie
in the head. and once a zombie's down, we could
decapitate it using the hard edge in a strong guillotine-
like motion. for those who's already been around in the
80's out there, recall what 'Macho Man' Randy Savage
(played Bonesaw in Spiderman for the young 'uns)did to
Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat. only replace the bell with
the chair....and no, Steamboat was not beheaded, but
almost 'choked to death' he had to be carried away in a
stretcher.

8. for sustenance, the rectory is the place to be. we could easily find a minimum two
week's worth of food supply in my estimate. it's only that we need to consume the highly
perishables first, fruits like the papaya. yeah, to put the libidos in check. there's a
time and place for everything and 'last thing we want is a survivor getting distracted
by his/her primal urges. when the supply's run out, we can subsist on the unconsecrated
wafers (emphasis on the unconsecrated) and mompo wine. sorry, guys but mompo's the
hardest poison we're going to get.

9. the organ -musical instrument- in the choir area of the cathedral could substitute as
'the sound and entertainment system in the house'. so, it would be ideal if one of the
survivors is a 'piano man' or 'piano person' to be politically correct. for it's
important not only to just survive, but for our minds to thrive, to maintain our
sanities, and music has that power. amen?
(and if that's the case, he or she'd be receiving requests from me like: mellon collie & the infinite sadness, my immortal,
brick, elvis ain't dead, the scientist, imagine, moonlight sonata, chopsticks, in between days, jump, easy, one of us, and of course the song that'd be
in vogue at these hypothetical times.....zombie, eyeh, eyeh, eyeyeahh! if he or she wouldn't oblige, then off to the crypt you go. bwahahahaha!)

10. the veneration room - while we wait it out to hopefully blow over, some of us can stay inside its cozy confines, take turns in a prayer vigil and gripe to heaven, "this isn't the resurrection of the body that's been taught us, right!?"

11. the wide parking space means plenty of room to manuever, plenty of space for evasive action, to run like hell. and while the barricades at the gate aren't been breached yet there's plenty of space to jog around to improve your cardio (see the movie, Zombieland)

12. the rector's high-end sedan - if the sh!t hits the fan, and we need to evacuate, we can evacuate in style.

See? I've got this all figured-out! Why go to the mall?
