is a reggae band based in Arlington, Virginia in the Northern Virginia / Washington, D.C. area. Starting as an active band in 1997, their music is produced under the record label Innerloop.

Jacob Hemphill (vocals, guitar) and Bob Jefferson (bass) met in first grade shortly after Hemphill had returned with his family from living in Africa. He and Jefferson then met Patrick O’Shea (keyboards), Ryan Berty (drums), and Ken Brownell (percussion) in middle and high school. After forming SOJA, they recorded their first album, the self-titled Soldiers of Jah Army, independently with sound engineer Jim Fox at LION and FOX Recording Studios in 2000. The band released their first full-length album, Peace in a Time of War, in 2002. SOJA then released a Dub version of the album titled Dub in a Time of War in 2005. In 2006, the band released Get Wiser, their second full-length album. It debuted in the Top 10 Reggae Albums on iTunes and has remained in the top 100 since its release. The album release party was held on January 6, 2006 at The State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia. It consisted of two separate sets, with the opening set being older songs, and the second set being Get Wiser in its entirety. The show was recorded and was released as a DVD, known as the Get Wiser Live DVD, on November 21, 2007. In January 2008, they released an EP titled, Stars and Stripes. That same month in Hawaii, SOJA recorded their live performances in Oahu, Maui, and Kailua-Kona. Those performances were released as a DVD, known as the SOJA – Live in Hawaii, on January 8, 2009. Most recently, SOJA released their third full-length album Born in Babylon on August 25, 2009 exclusively on iTunes.

Formed in 1975, their debut release, Kibudu, Mansetta And Abuku arrived on the small independent label Dip, and linked the plight of urban black youth with the image of a greater African homeland. They followed it with Nyah Love for Anchor. Surprisingly, they were initially refused live dates in Caribbean venues in the Midlands because of their Rastafarian beliefs. Aligning themselves closely with the Rock Against Racism organisation and featuring in its first music festival in the spring of 1978, they chose to tour with sympathetic elements of the punk movement, including the Stranglers, XTC etc.: "Punks had a way of enjoying themselves - throw hordes at you, beer, spit at you, that kind of thing". Eventually they found a more natural home in support slots for Burning Spear, which brought them to the attention of Island Records.
Their first release for Island was the Ku Klux Klan 45, a considered tilt at the evils of racism, and one often accompanied by a visual parody of the sect on stage. By this time their ranks had swelled to include Selwyn 'Bumbo' Brown (keyboards), Steve 'Grizzly' Nisbett (drums), Alphonso Martin (vocals, percussion) and Mykaell Riley (vocals). Handsworth Revolution was an accomplished long playing debut and one of the major landmarks in the evolution of British Reggae (Executive Producer Pete King). However, despite critical and moderate commercial success over three albums, the relationship with Island Records had soured by the advent of Caught You (released in the US as Reggae Fever).
Tom Terrell, who would later serve as their manager, was instrumental in masterminding the U.S. premiere of Steel Pulse on the night of Bob Marley's funeral, which was broadcast live around the world from the 9:30 Club, 930 F Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. on May 21, 1981.
They switched to Elektra Records, and unveiled their most consistent collection of songs since their debut with True Democracy, distinguished by the Garvey-eulogising 'Rally Round' cut. A further definitive set arrived in Earth Crisis. Unfortunately, Elektra chose to take a leaf out of Island's book in trying to coerce Steel Pulse into a more mainstream vein, asking them to emulate the pop-reggae stance of Eddy Grant. Babylon The Bandit was consequently weakened, but did contain the anthemic "Not King James Version", which was a powerful indictment on the omission of black people and history from certain versions of the Bible.
Their next move was of Hinds of Steel Pulse to MCA for State Of Emergency, which retained some of the synthesized dance elements of its predecessor. Though it was a significantly happier compromise, it still paled before any of their earlier albums. Centennial was recorded live at the Elysee Montmartre in Paris, and dedicated to the hundred year anniversary of the birth of Haile Selassie. It was the first recording since the defection of Alphonso Martin, leaving the trio of Hinds, Nisbett and Selwyn. While they still faced stern criticism at the hands of British Reggae fans, in the United States their reputation was growing, becoming the first ever reggae band to appear on the Tonight television show. Their profile was raised further when, in 1992, Hinds challenged the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission in the Supreme Court, asserting that their cab drivers discriminated against black people in general and Rastafarians in particular.
The Steel Pulse message of hope, education and activism has struck a chord with music lovers worldwide. Their international success has resulted in a Grammy award for their 1986 classic Babylon The Bandit, and nominations for subsequent albums Victims (1991) and Rastafari Centennial (1992). In 1989, the group contributed I Can't Stand it to the soundtrack of Spike Lee's film Do The Right Thing.
In 1994, the group headlined some of the world's biggest reggae festivals including Reggae Sunsplash USA, Jamaican Sunsplash, Japan Splash and Northern California annual Reggae on the River Festival. In 1986, Steel Pulse contributed an ethereal version of Franklin's Tower on Pow Wow Records' Fire on the Mountain: Reggae Celebrates the Grateful Dead compilation. They recently covered The Police's Can't Stand Losing You for a reggae compilation of Police tunes that will appear on the Ark 21 label. The band is particularly proud of "Rastanthology," a 17-song collection of Steel Pulse classics (the 1996 compilation was released on the band's own Wise Man Doctrine label).
"We're not here to start a physical revolution, we're just here to open everybody's eyes and let them check themselves and continue in a very educational mode to change things on that tip", Hinds explains. "We're losing ourselves and I think it's very important for us to realize that. Too many of our youths have been lost to drugs, or by the gun, or not having the education needed to persevere and move in an upward direction. I think RAGE & FURY will contribute to their enlightenment."
In 2007, The band released their music video for 'Door Of No Return', a track taken from their latest studio album "African Holocaust", which explores themes of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Shot on location in Senegal and New York City by Driftwood Pictures Ltd.
Steel Pulse played Friday night on the Jazz World Stage at the 2009 Glastonbury Festival.
Steel Pulse are collaborating with Driftwood Pictures to create a definitive feature length documentary on the band's thirty year history.
The band are currently working on a new album due out in 2010 and have released the single Barack Obama Song.
Original member Basil Gabbidon released the album Reggae Rockz in 2008.

september 2004,started as a three piece punk/ska band from malolos city. greatly influenced by foreign punk acts like rancid, operation ivy, the clash, the ramones and many more. was originally planned by three highschool friends: bam, dyewowm, and wulong. it never worked out because bam was getting a hard time learning to play the guitar, so the other two decided to find a drummer instead and continue the plan as a three piece band. they ended up playing with turon of cant wait any longer(now on redemption from downfall). thus, the band with its original line up was formed. they have produced a (very) low quality EP entitled "the nerd, the idiot, and the crybaby.." with 7 original compositions and a cover song.

after a year and a half (i guess?), they've had problems along the way and ended up for turon to leave the band. the band, without a drummer, acquired manny from trick or treat to play lead guitars for them. the three then, decided to ask archie, also from trick or treat, to play with them as a session drummer.

after some time, bam decided to join the band ( after taking basic drum lessons ). now that the band is alive and skanking again, they're hoping that this time, it will work out for them.---06/26/06---

TRICK OR TREAT
A ska-punk band from Malolos City emerges as a newly developed band in their hometown, Bulacan. Influenced by the music of Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake and Goldfinger, Trick or Treat provides listeners the taste of smooth yet radio-friendly type of music. With variation of influences, TOT had come up with their own songs and some revivals including the remake of Madonna's "Material Girl and the catchy tune of "Late worm, which is an original composition.

Formed in the summer of 2005, TOT is composed of ex-Big Mama Fortune vocalist Jordan Delos Santos, together with ex-Scars guitarist H.J. "Awo Capulong, ex-Big Mama Fortune Members, Manuel "Manny Edwind "Moks Espino and Mark Anthony "Rambo. Also joining the band is Archie, Jhed,Marlon and Jerome.

For those who are interested, Trick or Treat often plays in Bulacan and is occasionally invited to play in Manila. They're currently working on their EP Album. Hoping for less tricks and more treats, the band will be able to release the EP this summer.

Band Discography:

The Roots REvival Band Started year 2005. ThEy played in the acquiantance party of their college and later on, they started to get in the "big picture" which is the reggae scene of cebu.. They started playing outside the campus. They used to have gig in La Mer CAfe in mango square mall together with other contemporary reggae bands.. but until the cafe was closed, they decided to lie-low because of their studies, and the other bands(Santing Scalawags, Toy SoulJahs, SkanKin Brews, DomEstic Grass) are already booming after that time and they remained stagnant, but not until they finished college on year 08. then again a "new beginning" of the roots revival has begun. they played in RegGae Bars (hideout, outpost, 3 joints) and other events that were hosted by BT monster radio 105.9(UBEC 4:20 and Bob Marley Day 08)

and for now they are planning to record their songs, and for the meantime they play different versions of MAtisYahu, Bob and Damien Marley..

Being a metalhead I also admit such obsession with Asin, one of the best groups in the genre. I've discussed This on the previous version of rakista with me and Amiel dicussing on the copy of Asin's tribute album "Saro sa Bato Alay kay Cesar Banares". Really not sure if he's lucky enough to grab a copy of the album which feature bands like The Youth, Backdraft, Ang Grupong Pendong etc. Little trivia, Asin got it's name from being an English named band Salt of the Earth, which they later explained that Salt of the Earth is too long so they have shortened it to Asin. In 2005, Asin released "Ang bayan kong Sinilangan" Asin's greatest hits album composed of three CD's. Got the CD for less than 300 bucks. So, tell us your opinions on this great band.

Lutong Pinoy, lasang Pinoy. For the Filipino who loves to eat and enjoy life, the band SKABECHE strikes a chord of familiarity not just because its name alludes to the humble adaptation of the sweet and sour fish dish Escabeche, but because, though influence by the foreign sound of SKA, Skabeche is very much Filipino as this bunch of true-blue Pinoy musicians have added their own touch into the genre.

Ska is dance music first and foremost. Having originated from the island of Jamaica, the sound of Ska has captured the hearts of many people in different parts of the world with its invigorating beat. Ska was a Jamaicans dance music form that swept out of Jamaica in the early 1960Ԓs to shake the butts of working and middle-class Jamaicans before going on, via the West Indian immigrant connection, to the UK, and into the world.

Skabeches 10-member gang of musicians who has been milling the music scene for 8 years now prides themselves as sons of Baliuag, Bulacan and such a troupe is uncommon in the Philippines. Their individual influences, yes all ten of them are all tossed and turned into their sound, a mix of Punk, Blues, Jazz, Classical and What-You-Have into the melting pot that is SKABECHE. And aside from their influences, the variety of musical instruments they play also add depth to their sound- 3 saxophone, a trombone, trumpet, and percussions spice up the usual sound of guitars, bass, drums and vocals. Yes, indeed flavorful!.

Just like the people of Jamaica who have undergone a lot of struggles in their time, the Pinoy sentiments are very well triggered by this music form. Skabeche mirrors the Filipino heart and soul in their romance with Ska and ventures deep into present-day realities of the land in their songs. Like their composition ғLAMOK, which talks about Pinoy Politicians, is sensible, street smart and humorous - very Pinoy in the sense that it has the ability to pock fun at serious stuff. (Perhaps the very same reason why the genre came about). In fact, their voice has been loud enough to earn them a spot in a foreign release representing the country in a CD Compilation of Ska and Reggae music from around the globe.

The group now has performed hundreds of gigs, done several recordings and appeared on TV as well. Currently, Skabeche, hailed by FHM/For Him Magazine as one of the TOP INDEPENDENT ARTISTS in the Philippines, is a regular house band of Ka-toque, ԔLutong Barkada - a cooking show aired every Saturday at QTV11. Two of their songs Lamok and Part of Me are also included in the album Island Riddims, released under Galaxy Records.

The band today continues to enjoy life, love, music and dream on. A full album is now under works and maybe through their musical concoctions, SKABECHE may flavor our lives as well.

Collie Herb! oh my, oh my, kapapanood ko lang sila kanina sa xaymaca..!! ayos na ayos sila.. i love their beat! kahit na may jamaican accent sila.. gusto ko kumanta yung guitarista nila.. at si martin (vox) na nameet ko kanina at silang lahat.. f*ck man i like them!!!! kumanta rin sila ng ilang songs from bob marley, big mountains, no doubt! they're good!! and yes, they will release their EP on aprill.. bili lang ng orig!! btw, nagpagupit na si martin hindi na siya naka dreadz. naka one side na lang.. and i already invited them to register here.. eto pla yun autograph na nilagay sa likod na parang cardboard na patungan ng baso.. (di ko maalala kung ano tawag dun!) buti na lang ma-pr yun kasama ko..

~ the first time i saw this band was like 2 years ago lang sa xmas party ng NU107.. man, na starstrucked ako eh..! and yet, grade 4 siguro ako ng kinakanta/ sinasayaw ko na yung kantang " bilooog.. bilog na naman ang buwan.. ilabas naa.. ang kalokohan.." at ang kantang "kapayapaan.. kapayapaan.." ive never knew na may rasta blood na ako sa early stage ko.. haha!

i hope no one would oppose me if i say that undeniably, TROPICAL DEPRESSION is one of the greatest reggae bands in the Philippines..! they are dedicated to give a crucial reggae beat to de island and will always be!
