Aerosmith Toxic Twins Steven Tyler and Joe Perry took pot-shots at one another on TV at the weekend – but insisted they weren’t fighting.
The pair dug at each other in a mainly ligh-hearted fashion over the two-year turmoil that almost destroyed the band. In a series of comments they touched on Tyler’s Led Zeppelin audition, Perry’s attempts to find a new frontman, and Tyler signing up for TV gameshow American Idol without telling his colleagues.
Then they chased the source of their well-known bitchy relationship back to their first girlfriends.
The exchange took place on ITV’s Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday.
Host Jonathan Ross: So, I suppose one of the last big fallings out you had is when you accepted a job on American Idol and didn’t think to pick up the phone and tell one of your oldest friends?
Tyler: Nah – I don’t think that’s how it happened. I think they were just jealous because I was sitting next to J-Lo. He’s always had a big crush on her.
Perry [to Ross]: No, it was more what you said. [To Tyler] But I thought it was a good job for you. You got to dump all your one-liners and ––
Tyler: And not put them in the songs, huh?
Perry: No, I never thought it took away from…
Ross: Now, I don’t want to start an argument.
Tyler: We’re not fighting!
Perry: No, this is normal.
Ross [to Perry]: But you didn’t know, did you? You found out the same as everyone else?
Perry: Yeah, I read it somewhere.
Tyler: And two months prior to that they were looking for another lead singer – so I figured I’d fix them good, right?
Ross [to Perry]: Were you?
Perry: Well, after I’d read in the paper that he was trying out for Led Zeppelin…
Ross: So you’re saying, ‘I did this bad thing, but only because you did this’?
Perry: This goes back a long way. Forty years…
Tyler: Let’s take it back. Let’s see if we can get to first girlfriends.
Perry: I was just thinking about that today. Because there is a connection there.
Tyler: You see this? How epiphanous!
Ross: Who stole whose first girlfriend?
Tyler: We were in an apartment building and we all lived together, and I thought that was the secret to making it. That was the secret: the band being together and writing songs. I said to Joe, ‘Hey man, we’re together finally, we’re writing songs!’ And he moved out in two weeks with his girlfriend. And I’ve never forgiven him!
Perry [to Ross]: And this girl was part of his past – let’s put it that way.
Ross: His old girlfriend?
Perry [to Tyler]: Well, I don’t know. You never really…
Tyler: I never really told you what happened with that.
Perry: And you know what? I don’t really care!”
Tyler: It came out in a song called Love In An Elevator. Actually it was I Don’t Want To Kiss Your Thing…
The Jonathan Ross Show is available for a limited time via ITV Player. Tyler and Perry appear at the 30-minute mark.
